Wiltshire-based singer/songwriter J C Leonard takes his inspiration from folk legends such as Bob Dylan and the Carter family. While Bob's an occasionally audible influence in the five songs on this CD, what lacks here is the subtlety and depth of insight that can be found in his hero's lyrics and music. J C's songs are simple and in that way they do hold some appeal, but the recording and mixing leave a lot to be desired. Bad grammar aside, title track is repetitive and lacks a drum or percussion track to carry it along. "Love Me" is a country ballad which is probably the most accessible song on the LP and finds J C's voice taking on shades of Neil Young. "Join My Heart" has a Jewish feel. "Everything You Are" feels like it was rushed out and suffers from underproduction, while "Hope Alone" is a questioning song, offering answers found in God's promises. There is no doubt about J C's sincerity and the gospel content present in his songs, but those factors alone are not enough. J C's voice is strained and occasionally irritating and, in the end, it's just not an enjoyable listen.
