As its title suggests, Texan singer/songwriter Isa Agape's latest EP takes awakening as its central theme and a number of different scenarios are used to help unpack the concept in thoughtful and reflective fashion. The opener "Hollywood" begins by finding the singer full of optimism for the future before, in something of an unexplained curveball, declaring that her awakened hope now lies in the titular LA neighbourhood. Second up, "Destiny" is a more traditional song of defiance against anyone who keeps you from being who you are meant to be whilst the moving "Breathe" talks candidly about hurt and pain before suggesting that "forgiveness is the sweetest thing" - a hint towards the artist's Christian faith without mentioning any specifics. Lastly, "Song For Mom" is a hugely personal song which deals with grief and waking up to the hope that both parties will one day meet again in a way that will be a salve to many going through the loss of a loved one. The contemplative subject matter of this release is matched by a similarly considered musical approach - straightforward and slightly melancholy but never dreary - and Agape's classic wistful indie vocals fit the bill perfectly.
