Iris's first album 'Infamous Angel' caused an immense impact. As soon as the songs and voice of this unknown were heard on country radio the clamour for information was deafening. This follow up has another collection of wonderful new songs, the striking significance of many being the fact that they are shot through with strangely Christian-based philosophy. The sleeve notes indicate the artist's deep influence from her father, whose brand of religion was vintage rural American fundamentalist style. His life, home spun Christianity, and death in 1992 was referred to in both albums - here the extraordinarily frank "No Time To Cry" and "Mom And Dad's Waltz" are beautiful examples. Other DeMent originals such as "The Shores Of Jordan", "My Life" and "Childhood Memories" display strong Christian tendencies as does her use of one of The Carter Family gospel classics "Troublesome Waters". Above all, it's the voice, totally distinctive and truly unforgettable. No jokes about getting demented, but an essential listening experience.
