When I see some of these instrumental worship CDs I often wonder who buys them, and the first person I think of is my mum! I used to listen to some of the American instrumental worship music like the Colours series (Tom Howard, Smitty Price and co) and it's great to see more UK music around now. "Simple, well crafted arrangements, coupled with fantastic musicians help set the mood of peace and tranquillity where intimacy with God can be found" is the promise on the cover of this fifth volume in the series, and they're not wrong. There is an open style to the arrangements that gives breathing space and the acoustic instruments sound quite organic. The usual UK session suspects, in the form of Andrew Green, James Oliver, Simeon Wood and co, provide faultless performances and the production is smooth. The standout thing for me is the beautiful, emotive cello playing which tugs at your heart. Instrumental albums like this can often be accused of veering towards DIY shop music and taken on its own this is true here, but if you know the songs it makes a lot of difference as the music takes on another level. I'm still not sure if I would buy it, but it is a good CD.
