Reviewed by Elliot Rose Hidden in the shadow of Birmingham is Calvary Church, which boasts an energy-filled monthly youth event, Meet The Maker, with ID Music providing the worship. The event's first album brings to your ears all the emotion live from Dormston Mill Theatre, featuring 11 self-penned anthems. Kicking off with "Glory Of Your Name", this adrenaline-pumped band thrash out enthusiastic yet tuneful melodies, delivered by soaring vocals, thick guitars and smooth keyboards. However, almost spoiling the album for me is the drummer's "anti-rhythmic" playing, with far too many drum rolls and syncopated beats, which simply sounds messy. On the plus side, melodically the album is outstanding, with tunes you can hum long after the music has faded. Lyrically, though, it suffers from a similar problem to that of many modern worship albums. Primary songwriter Peter Wright described them as "Scripture-filled", but it seems more "copied and pasted", without any memorable, inspiring phrases or poetic twists to bring out the truths of Scripture. Definitely the highlight of the album for me was the track "Love", a gentle, tear-jerking ballad featuring some superb vocals and beautiful acoustic guitar playing by Samuel Wright (a better guitarist than drummer!).

Everlasting - Meet The Maker is the culmination of 18 months’ hard work of seeking, writing and rehearsing.
Everlasting is the latest chapter in a worship journey of young people hungry for His presence.
ID is the youth ministry of Calvary Church. ‘Meet The Maker’ is a monthly gathering purposed to passionately worship and encounter God.
Pete Wright (Calvary Church UK) says, “As a young worship team we have worked hard to craft new worship material that reflected the raw heart and sounds of our regular worship experience. We wanted to craft scripture-filled, relevant worship that meant if our young people had a hard time getting into the word, the word had an easy time getting into their hearts via catchy tunes and anthem-like choruses. Our vision is to draw people into a greater sense of God’s presence and power. We’d love to further inspire and instigate uncompromising, passionate worship!” |
Having listened to this album, I love the energy that the drums bring to the songs. I'd give my right arm to have a young drummer with so much passion and creativity in my team.
