This album reminds me of childhood holidays stuck in the very north of Scotland where the only radio station available was Radio 2 delivering an interminable everlasting diet of easy listening banality. Major Davies has penned many pieces of music whilst working for the Salvation Army in Australia. Here some of his hymns are performed instrumentally. Flutes and pianos and small brass ensembles do their stuff, a chorus of singers ooh and aah and a Last Of The Summer Wine harmonica plays. At best this is test card music for the over 50s to have in the background as they pad slipper clad around their bungalows. It's beautifully recorded and if you listen to Radio 2 but hate Steve Wright because he's too modern, this will appeal to you. But I'm left wondering whether William Booth would approve. I suspect if he were around today he'd be stealing riffs from Oasis or writing raps for hip hop bands rather than listening to this easy listening schlock. Times change and so should we!
