The Jesus revolution in the 70s was a spiritual revival amongst hippies who turned off drugs and turned onto Jesus. Many converts began sharing their faith through music. Whilst the likes of Larry Norman and Bob Hartman were playing rock, Honeytree played a hybrid of folk and country that seemed radical compared to the conservative church music of the time. 20 years on, her anniversary album of 11 new songs seems tame, although it is excellently produced and played. Honeytree has a pleasant voice in a Carly Simon vein and the music is tinged with country influences. It contains beautiful songs of exhortation and worship. Honeytree even manages Spanish on a couple! I have two favourites. "Worth Waiting For" is a romantic ballad reflecting on the way in which Jesus brings couples together. "Pioneer" speaks of God calling us to press on in the Spirit. It also describes the way in which Honeytree herself has worked as a pioneer, leading the way musically for others to follow. After all, without pioneers like Honeytree there would be no Amy Grant, Kim Hill or Margaret Becker and the world would be a duller place.
