After years of gruelling touring and a long list of demos, this Californian quintet have finally released their debut EP available as a free download. Over the years their style has remained unique however 'Road Trip' demonstrates how practise really does make perfect. The opening track "Old School Rocking Crew" is an anthemic, riff-fuelled cut showcasing the full extent of their musical abilities. The chaotic guitars combined with Bob's harsh vocals make Hippos Of Doom a fine example of modern punk. The heavy "The Royal Philharmonic Goes To The Bathroom" demonstrates just how versatile these Californian rockers can be. Bob's vocals are definitely an acquired taste and aren't brilliant, but at the end of the day, punk wasn't always in tune. The raw and edgy sound to 'Road Trip' gives it such character and makes it truly original. This five track EP may be small but it really packs a punch.
