Following their formation in 1995 GRYP (pronounced grip) quickly established themselves in the California metal scene. 15 years on from their last release lead singer Curtis Shamlin has resurrected the band to produce this five-track EP of new music. 'I Wanna Be God' manages to tread the fine line providing enough variety without making for a disjointed and jarring experience. There are two ballads to bookend the record showing a more melodic side with opener "Can't Deny You" building to a crescendo from an acoustic intro and closer "Take Some More" showing a funkier side with a strong bass groove. The title track has a more intense feel opening with an almost sinister sounding spoken word section before giving way to classic chugging guitars and screaming vocals. GRYP clearly have many strings to their metal bow adding to the power metal ballads and heavy metal onslaughts by throwing in a more progressive track in "With A Kiss" which rises and falls from layers of drums and guitars to just a solitary guitar before rising again for a rousing finish. This record showcases what the band are capable of demonstrating a great range of dynamics and styles and offering glimpses of the technical ability of all musicians. The clean sung vocals are a bit weak in places with the vocals standing out as much stronger when screamed and there are places where the mix could be tighter but the passion makes up for these minor niggles.
