Despite this being currently the best selling US gospel album, I have to admit that I had never heard Glad before this cassette landed with a muted thump on my hallway floor. I hadn't been to Spring Harvest so missed the buzz, generated by their performances there and certainly never encountered their early albums before they kicked out the instrumentation. When I saw the word "acapella" I thought, great! My ears are about to be blessed with some wonderful classical harmonies. I then turned to the back cover to see what was on offer, and my previous thought looked as if it was about to be fulfilled: "Crown Him With Many Crowns" .... "When I Survey The Wondrous Cross" .... Into the cassette machine, switch on; (don't forget the graphic equalizer) sit back and wait ... I almost fell off my seat laughing. What my ears were tickled by was a combination of the King Singers/ Beach Boys/Black and White Minstrels. Now I have a problem. Not only do I have a false impression in my mind of what it should sound like; but personally, I dislike the whole King Singers genre. So how can I review this without bias and please the boss (T.C.) at Cross Rhythms? Impossible. So if this review does not appear you will know why ...! I have to admit, the harmonies are good, the voices have a great range; and it sounds very jaunty. But I just cannot remove from my head the vision of grown men dancing across the stage dressed in lurex tights! * (Lisa Matthew's rating)
