Such was the praise heaped on Gareth's 2014 album 'All The People' that I was very much looking forward to hearing the London-based singer/songwriter's new EP. I must confess that I was underwhelmed. There are some pluses of course. The crisp production is way above the standards of most independent releases while there's plenty of rock drive on the opener "Hideaway". Also the wall-of-sound arrangement on the melodramatic "Within A Yard Of Hell" has its moments. But the limited range of Gareth's voice stopped this reviewer, at least, from fully entering into the songs while his re-imagining of Fanny Crosby's "Blessed Assurance", although featuring some impressive piano work, is let down by a new melody which, to my ears, isn't as good as the original. No doubt Gareth will be as disappointed this review as I am with his EP.
