This album by brothers Errol and Trey Gilbert and friend Chris Louis - otherwise known as the G-Bros - cut 'Soul Stories' In 2000 but I missed it at the time. I can report 24 years later that, impressively, the album has dated hardly at all. The thudding drum loops and doodling keys heard here are still often the chosen accompaniments for many of today's gospel exponents. G-Bros offer plenty of smooth harmonies behind Errol's melismatic lead. Sometimes Errol overdoes the vocal acrobatics but on the whole he's able to draw out the maximum drama from the mix of funky gospel stompers ("Praise You 2 Your Feet") and down-on-your-knees ballads ("You're Mine") which make up this set. There isn't a song here that could have catapulted G-Bros or SYA Music Group to the big time but if you're still looking for sounds that would get any bunch of righteous dancers out onto the dance floor or some passionate, soulful emoting this is an album you should check out.
