Portland, Oregon-based Fallstar release an album that is gloriously chaotic in its construction. Mixing hardcore aesthetics with plenty of pop sensibilities and the occasional metal moment gives an aural landscape that is always shifting. Vocalist Chris Ratzlaff careers across this landscape with gymnastic vocal qualities and is ably backed by guitarist Jason Brown, while the hardcore/metal vocals of bassist Bryan Ratzlaff adds another layer to the affair. The lyrics proclaim God in a more open and obvious way than other bands of this ilk often attempt. As Chris explains, "I write what I'm passionate about and consequently it has to do with my love for God and the life he's given me". "If what these men do is of God, you will never be able to stop them" proclaims the opening line of "Lurchers", probably the track that best displays all the elements of the band. It may be gloriously chaotic but 'Reconciler, Refiner, Igniter' packs a powerful spiritual punch.
