Although listed as pop, this album by this Edinburgh-based collective could be listed under 12 different genres, such is the diversity of the material here. Formed in 2003, this is their first all original album and includes elements of gospel, blues, rock and chamber music. The album opens with a gentle piano and strings-led scene setter which is then followed by a folk rock cut, at times reminiscent of Rick Elias. Other highlights include the rich orchestral strings on "Speak" and the raw blues feel of "Shining Light". The project that was birthed from a reading of Jacob wrestling with God draws heavily on Scripture for lyrical material, many songs setting passages directly to music. The production is crystal clear but though each track stands up well on its own overall the album lacks stylistic coherence. Having said this, if you find one track not to your taste, you can be sure the next one will be completely different and will reveal some excellent musicianship.
