Soulful gospel music from a British three-piece, Essence mix together a lot of creative ideas, excellent vocals and gospel music with a message. I think any album that borrows the 70s soul classic of a girl answering a telephone to hear a deep throated guy whisper sweet nothings and have him tell her that though they're apart, Jesus is close - well, it has to be cool! The two mixes of the title track tell the story of the woman who touched the hem of Jesus garment and was healed but takes the message and makes it a broader exhortation to reach out to Jesus. "We Don't Pray Together Anymore" is a timely reminder for married couples to maintain their devotional life together. This album works best when they re making sweet soul music so the vibe of "Always" and "Heaven" are both convincing whereas the attempts at a bit of dance groove on "Mercy" doesn't really cut it. There are moments on this where the limitations of the budget really do show which is a shame but ultimately talent and creativity do win out, just! Good to see British acts going for it and getting tracks recorded. With more budget, Essence are capable of making an album that will really hit the spot. I can t wait to hear some more!
