When I first became a Christian in 1980, Don Francisco was already established as one of the giants of the emergent CCM and his classic songs like "He's Alive" and "Adam Where Are You" remain as two of the most powerful and anointed songs in the whole Christian music canon. What Francisco was brilliant at was imaginatively putting Bible stories into passionately sung narratives. But that was in the '70s and this album, a self-produced, self-financed effort recorded in Colorado in 2005, showed that Don had all but abandoned his narrative style in favour of less ambitious songs of faith and adoration. Melody was never Don's greatest strength and though the veteran had assembled some excellent country-styled musicians to give them a bit of polish, 'That I May Know You' meanders on its way without sparking much response from this reviewer at least. There are some clever and challenging lyrics in "Don't You Talk That Way" and "Higher Ground" and "My Jesus I Love Thee" are old hymns with additional lyrics by Don. Those seeking to collect all of Francisco's recordings may want this album but I would suggest it's some way from his earlier classics.
