Reviewed by Kwaku If you’re a fan of contemporary gospel, if you love the funk and love to dance to a groovy beat, then there’s no doubt that many a time you’ve had to shake your body to some funky grooves whose lyrical stance was at odds with one’s Christian beliefs and morality. How many Christian or ‘good’ girls have we met who loved some of rap’s hardcore elements, such as 2Pac. Why? Because despite the often profanity-strewn lyrics, they found his voice and his R&B-laced grooves irresistible. Well, Christians who like to funk will find in ‘Focus’ a very funky album that competes well with anything on the secular market. Their vocals, both lead and harmonies, sound delicious, and above all, their lyrics are unadulterated gospel/Jesus-centred. Whilst “Need To Know” and the uplifting praise songs “Your Joy” and “Praisin’ On My Mind” may be on the downlow tempo tip, just about anything else here’s on the groovy and funky tip. From the title track, “Not Just Anybody”, through to Timbaland-ish production styled “Wrapped” and “Child Of God”. Groovy, God-centred, and gorgeous!
