The tendency for artists who once sang lead of a group to repackage their successful songs as their' hits with scant credit to the original group is decidedly questionable. (At least this reissue of (mainly) old Dallas Holm And Praise tracks mentions Praise in passing; the recent Andrae Crouch reissues didn't bother to credit the Disciples at all!) So-whadabout-the-music? Spanning tracks from their golden age, including a cut or two from their platinum 'Live' album there is a bewildering mixture of styles, some of them the blues-rock items for instance sounding decidedly dated. Where Dallas's warm, vibrant voice works best is on ballads and there are a couple of classics here, the beautiful "Rise Again" from 1976 and one of the most poignantly lovely hotel- rooms-bright-lights-and-loneliness songs ever written "Hittin' The Road", cut last year. No doubt there are some Holm devotees in the UK (though nothing like as many as in America) eager to pounce on this compilation, but I find Dallas's melodramatic inspirational 'classics' like "Didn't He Shine" (from 1973) almost unlistenable today.
