1980s synth/techno pop influences (think Yazoo and their ilk) surface in the very first few bars of the opening track "Inside Your Love", so I wonder what came first for Coco O'Connor - retro tastes, or the influence of voice training with Annie Lennox's vocal coach Kate Agresta? Putting a more contemporary slant on it, Coco's website describes her style as "Dido meets Goldfrapp", but Annie Lennox definitely looms largest within the stylistic melange. There are also hints that this believer in the mainstream may have listened to WWMT - the sampling of Ravi Zacharias on "Something Beautiful" is more than a little reminiscent of the Tribe's "Re:Revival" with Duncan Campbell. Apparently Coco isn't a British artist, but an American, and apparently of part-Cherokee, part-European descent. Overall impressions are that minimalist production, some catchy melodies and Coco's haunting vocals result in an album which is certainly memorable, while all who caught her set at the Edinburgh Fringe say she's great live.
