A Merseyside folk duo who say their influences are Show Of Hands and the Levellers, the Carvers consist of Richard Carver (vocals, guitar) and Thomas Carver (violin, mandolin). Richard is 17 and Thomas 14 and it's the latter's youthfulness where the problem lies - his violin playing has a feel for the folk idiom but too often produces the painful musical effect of fingernails on blackboard all but ruining listening pleasure. Two or three of the four songs here, particularly the catchy opener "If The Crown Fits", are outstanding and Richard has a perfect voice for the roots idiom. But 'A World To Win' is still a gruelling listen.
