Formed in 2011, Caris are led by co-producers Callum Taylor (drums) and singer/guitarist Nicoleta who hails from Romania. 'Metamorphosis' contains 12 original tracks by the band, and Nicoleta also writes the lyrics in English and a little Romanian, which makes for an intriguing change. Caris plough a familiar acoustic pop/rock furrow in a gently accomplished if unsurprising way. The production lets the songs and vocals take centre stage, albeit with the occasional flourish, such as Clare Anand's restrained saxophone. Nicoleta's vocals are distinctive, her Romanian accent influences some of her phrasing. Unfortunately, she is limited in range and sometimes slightly out of tune. Also, the songs are not immediately memorable although "Stranger" and "To Know You" do have catchy elements to them. Lyrically Nicoleta is working in a second language and it can show at times; maybe she would benefit from the input of a more experienced co-writer for future projects. Caris have decided to donate all profits made from 'Metamorphosis' to the work of charity Child And Family Pro Deo, inspired by some of Nicoleta's working experiences in her native Romania.
