Formerly known as Fortunate Sons, Scottish band By The Way release their debut CD featuring eight songs. The band have been playing locally in the usual places - youth clubs, churches, pubs, prisons and festivals. The sound is pop rock with a message, which serves their desire to reach out to those who aren't Christians. Though there are some songs here that have a catchiness - I love the Hammond-driven "Come Down" and there's a bit of a sax-fest taking place on "Lessons". The main problem here is that the whole CD really lacks energy; so rather than the songs hitting me between the eyes, it's like having a soggy lettuce thrown at you. With a muggy rhythm section and vocals that are tuneful but lacking commitment, By The Way are clearly another good band who simply need a decent record producer.
