From way down south of the US of A comes the aptly-nicknamed Boy Sparrow with his comeback album. (Bryan was a child gospel star.) The album opens with a short skit, which I guess is probably based on real life; we hear Bryan’s mum fending off yet another industry shark who wants to sign her son to the other side, and Bryan then going off to pray, “Lord, I just want to do your will.” I can’t help but wonder what he would have said if God had replied, “I want you to get a secular deal!” I’ve got nothing against the guy; I just wish people would stop perpetuating the myth that a career in secular music means an artist has turned against God- especially when it’s obvious that Bryan’s songwriters listen to the stuff themselves (the track “My God” borrows its melody and much of its chorus lyrics from the old Bruce Hornsby song “The Way It Is”). John P Kee’s “Walk In The Light” gets a spirited cover, with backing vocals provided by the 32-member Benjamin Cone lll & Worship Choir (who also appear on four other songs). A personal favourite is “Wonderfully Made”- a stirring reminder of who we are in God.
