I first heard this fine artist when a tape of his early music was sent to me by a friend in the USA Christian music business. He was also featured on a 'new faces' compilation by Word USA which had no UK release. I remember thinking that here was someone capable of secular success and behold, it's happened for him. Brooks' highly inventive guitar style, beautifully rich voice and superb songwriting have earned countless acclaim, eg, "best new artist album of 1990", and "No 1 folk album of 1990", all from esteemed critics in the real music world. And now, taaa raaah! his new album's available in the UK. A wonderful set in the approximate area of Martyn Joseph/Paul Simon. Some sweet blues and rural south strands, a few sharp instrumentals and excellent compositions such as "All That Is Gold" based on a Tolkein poem. Christian content? It's there, my friends, it's there, on songs like "Stormy Weather", based on a parable discussing foundations, and others. Support people like this, who are lighting candles where people can see them, and give yourself a treat at the same time.
