GL records are a Birmingham-based label, focusing on the local urban gospel scene. This is their third volume and features artists such as Netty Joshia (two songs) and J-Elect. This is certainly an eclectic mix, but highlights for me include "Devil" by Ni Sheng, with its slightly off the wall narrative on temptation and doubt; the rather infectious "Inspire" from the Urban collective J-Elect and the beautifully delivered "Be Still", from Alima Rico Emmanuel, sounding a lot like Corinne Bailey Rae, sung over a very gentle guitar. Not every song is a must listen, but there is enough variety and creativity among the 19 tracks here to demonstrate that the urban gospel artists emerging from Birmingham's Afro-Caribbean Church have much to offer the national and even international scene.
