The Gaithers' take on Southern gospel is a broad church, absorbing country, bluegrass, middle of the road, pop and black gospel. But it's a potent mixture and one that's wildly popular in America, where the Homecoming Tours reputedly out-sell Elton John. It's not hard to see why. There are 20 tracks here, recorded live in a big tent in the grounds of the Billy Graham Library. They vary in feel depending on who is leading, but each one is the ultimate in professionalism. Everything is so well-rehearsed it seems simple. The set-up is a re-creation of the old-style tent revivals of the 1950s and '60s. I love the songs featuring the creamy harmonies of the Gaither Vocal Band but there is a huge assortment of Friends, including the Oak Ridge Boys and The Hoppers. They've even got the venerable George Beverly Shea singing two songs and he is rapturously greeted, as are all the vocalists. Many of the songs are upbeat, like "I Don't Want To Get Adjusted" and "Bosom Of Abraham" but there is also plenty of gentle sentimental singing, like "I'll Worship Only At The Feet Of Jesus". If you enjoy the series this is well up to par.
