You could question the title - not all the artists here are "gospel" with a standout cut being sung by Neil Wilson, once the lead singer of those fondly remembered pop rockers Steve, and not everything is acoustic - the version of the evergreen "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" by diva Natalie Phillips doesn't have an acoustic instrument in earshot. But it would be churlish to nit pick when all the profits from this set are being donated to Oxfam, Save The Children, Lauriston Primary School and Harrington Hill Primary School. In fact, it's the cherubic voices of the pupils from the two Hackney schools who add their vocals to "Start It Over" sung by a soulful voiced Minnie Ripperton-sounding Antonia Boyo and the effect is delightful and surprisingly uncheesy. Another good cut in "Until That Day Comes" by Folu with the Hill City Mass Choir while the funky hip-hop of DM Squared and the slinky gospel blues romp by soloist Mercy are also top quality. Rockhill Music and the House On The Rock church community project are to be congratulated for delivering an album with such engaging vibey urban grooves, messages that speak of the one true God and yet are making connections with the community outside the Church. Make sure you get your order in for this exemplary various artists album.
