Consisting of five musical friends who live on the Isle Of Wight and officially became a band back in 2007, the members of folk rock collective Asaph have finally released their first full album. Despite getting off to a shaky start vocally with "Broken", the likes of the Eagles-styled "Close" and the banjo-led alternate worship song "O Emmanuel" soon showcase the band's ability to turn out easy going, Americana-tinged material that gently seeks to glorify God. The decision to alternate lead vocal duties between siblings Tim and Patience Wells works well with both giving a different feel to their respective songs and, whilst there is a general need for sharper lyricism in order to maintain the listener's interest, songs such as the simply beautiful "Everlasting Story" - featuring a stunning vocal performance from Patience and some delightful Kate Bush-like piano - show the potential that Asaph has to turn out something special. Whilst the likes of "Through The Valley" - pitched way too low for singer Tim who nonetheless does a valiant job - and the melodically and admirably experimental "Bring Me Back" don't always work, there are enough moments like the rootsy rendition of James G Small's hymn "I've Found A Friend" and the folky tale of gratitude for Jesus' sacrifice "From The Battlefield" to make this a promising and enjoyable debut album.
