The work of Arvo Part should need little introduction to Cross Rhythms readers. "Fratres" is one of Part's most popular pieces, appearing in versions for string quartet, string orchestra, groups of instruments and, originally, as a set of variations for violin and piano. The piece is sparse but sweet, magical and prayerful, simple yet intricate. As one commentator put it, 'Rarely has silence been "composed" to such a degree.' Bachmann is a virtuoso, an extremely talented and gifted violinist. Her only fault is that she introduces a touch too much emotion and expression to a piece which should surely be played as selflessly, ritualistically and minimally as possible. Kidon Kremner's original recording on ECM Records is still definitely the best money can buy, but this version is very compelling, definitely excellent and well worth acquiring. Also included is Messiaen's "Praise To The Immortality Of Jesus" from the Quartet For The End Of Time. Here Bachmann plays with a good depth of feeling, but it seems that she lacks something of a spiritual dimension so necessary to a convincing performance of Messiaen. The other pieces on this collection are not by Christian composers and will receive little comment. Suffice to say that the performance of Paul Moravec's "Sonata" is absolutely brilliant and should be of interest to "any collector of 20th century music. An excellently performed collection of modern works.
