Kent-based songsmith Andy describes the tracks on his latest album as made up of songs performed in prisons, universities and bars. Musically, Mr Mayo's leanings are clearly towards jazz and blues. but with a twist. An example is "A Hill" which is best described as a story/analysis song with its acoustic guitar intervention and a lyric referencing a hill "where grace takes a seat." Truly a powerful and engaging track. "Saviour" explores the thoughts and feelings of "ordinary people" in a fashion not far removed from some of Sting's greatest moments while "Broken Man" changes the pace with a driving bass line. The most striking thing about 'Lavish' is the narrative style of the lyrics which draw you into some thought provoking stories. There are QR codes in the CD booklet which you can scan with your Smartphone. Overall, this album takes a few listens to get under your skin, but when it gets there, the rewards are great.
