A talented pianist and singer, Manchester-based Alice Gasson has the ability to transport the listener up and away beyond the everyday and humdrum. One of the brighter lights of the Didsbury Arts Festival 2010, this husky voiced entertainer has on this EP put together five stylistically diverse tracks while the easy-on-the-ear arrangements with their simple rhythms, basic foot tapping beats and uncomplicated backing work well. Alice's dry but lively voice sounds not unlike a latter day Melanie as she expresses her experiences, opinions and thoughts. While not in the Mark Peric and Mike Webber class, the backing duo is tight, well-rehearsed and down to earth. Among the more listenable of the offerings are "Valiant" - Alice's voice weaves a tapestry around the tinkling piano and grumbling bass; "Oceans Creature" is rhythmic and bright; and "Sands Of Japan" with its clever combination of vocals, tight bass linked with subtle drum variations.
