One of the pioneers of African American gospel music, with 29 tracks here, including his 50s greatest hits. Bradford's influence undoubtedly extended to many of the black artists who at that time were crossing over to soul, blues and pop spheres. Seven tracks here see daylight for the first time and get yourself an earful of "Move Upstairs" where Bradford duets with the mighty Bessie Griffin who seems to be criminally under-recorded. So where do, we rate Mr Bradford on the chart of great gospel songsters? Well, his style's tough enough, soaked in steamy soul, the title track's highly reminiscent of classic Ray Charles smouldering over something like "Georgia On My Mind". The songs where he speeds up still have the rasping vocal style, and even an occasional Little Richard-style of scream (Richard was hugely influenced by Alex). But rarely does this album take off to pummel the innocent passer-by as the choicest practitioners can. Not in the same class as similar recordings by R H Harris or Sam Cooke, and in places too typical-sounding for comfort, inviting naughty thoughts of parody.
