If you are a bit lacking in your knowledge of Christian music history, the father of this artist, Albert E Brumley, composed one of the most recorded songs in 20th century Christian music, "I'll Fly Away". Now his son helps perpetuate the memory of the Southern gospel composer by singing Brumley's songs and talking about his achievements. Al Brumley Jr isn't the greatest singer in the world but when he's duetting with a country giant like Merle Haggard as on the great song "There's A Road Down The Road" you have a timeless sound that will warm the hearts of any country gospel enthusiast. There are some fine songs here of course - Albert E's "Turn Your Radio On", "(Amazing Grace) The Sweetest Song I Know", "Camping In Canaan's Land" - while the production from studio whiz Gary S Paxton is its usual inventive self. But pride of place has to go to three amazing Latin music versions of "I'll Fly Away" (two of which have guest Tony Melendez, that musician who despite having no arms astonishingly plays guitar with his feet). All in all, a fascinating look at the rural origins of devotional music.
