The first request we find in Jesus prayer is that of unity. Jesus talks to His Father about the unity and intimacy that He has with God and requests that the believers may also operate in this sort of relationship with God and with each other.
"...that they may be one as We are." John 17:11
Jesus knew that out of unity came peace, power and perfection and that it would be this that would draw others to know and love Him. In this way He was not only praying for believers but knew the effects this unity would have in touching unbelievers and drawing them to Himself.
"I in them and You in me, that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me." (John 17:23)
Again we see Jesus praying a multi-faceted, multi-functional prayer. I am not suggesting that we be anything but real when we pray to God, we must be ourselves and no more; but it is inspiring and beautiful to see the depths of Jesus’ prayers for us and all of humankind and to recognise all that He sees coming out of one single word being perfected in the lives of believers.
