Television talent searches become source of Christian music artists.
IN THE 21st May Christian Herald journalist George Luke wrote about the numerous Christians from the American Idol TV talent search who have gone on to record in Christian music. Luke name-checked Reuben Studdard (the 2003 winner), Clay Aiken (Studdard's runner up), Fantasia Barrino (last year's winner) and RJ Helton (who finished fifth in the very first series). The article also mentioned Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian (former worship leader with the Planetshakers youth ministry) and Sipokazi Luzipo, who joined the Soweto Gospel Choir after competing in the South African version of Popstars. Commented Luke, "Surely it can't have been what Simon Fuller intended when he conceived it but such (TV talent searches) have become a rich source of talent for the Christian music industry."
