The liturgical songwriter Ray Repp suing Andrew Lloyd Webber.
AMERICAN composer and Catholic, Ray Repp is suing theatrical composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, alleging that the title song from 'Phantom Of The Opera' is "substantially the same song" as his own composition "Til You".
The Repp song was originally released on an album titled 'Benedictions' on K&R records in 1978. Repp had not heard the music from 'Phantom Of The Opera' until he was given a copy of an album featuring highlights of the show by a friend last Christmas.
"When I heard the music," said Repp, "I said, 'that's my song.'" He remains undeterred by the failure of previous attempts to win similar cases by artists who have sued composers as diverse as Stevie Wonder and George Harrison.
