AMERICAN trade magazine Billboard reported recently that CGI Records
is shaping up to be "the No 1 label in gospel". Earlier this year the
label purchased Lexicon/Light as well as A&M's fledgling gospel
division (acquiring the US distribution of Benson Records in the
process) and in May finalised a distribution deal in the States with
secular giant PolyGram. CGI chairman Steve Devick told Billboard, "We
intend to have more charted albums in gospel this year." In a short
space of time CGI have built up a catalogue of 100 albums and is
currently charting on America's black gospel chart with Hezekiah Walker, Douglas
Miller, Witness and the Christianaires.
