Tony Cummings brings the lowdown on Doncaster purveyors of summery pop rock, TRUTH.
The recent release of 'Can't Wait Another Day' by Doncaster-based father and son duo Truth has given Britain's Christian music scene an unexpected radio hit. Slick production (from engineer John Spence), hauntingly effective lead vocals (dad Keith Hamilton) and deft guitars, bass, keys and programming (son Chris Hamilton) combine to make a sound which shine with summery, good vibes while its lyrics proclaim direct spiritual truth. Wanting to know more about the group and their background I asked Keith to fill me in on some of the detail. "We had quite a successful country rock career which included two record label/distribution deals and excellent CD sales. We were then offered a great deal in Nashville but our faith had a different plan for us, it just never felt right God giving us this talent and not using it to praise him. So we turned it down and wrote and recorded an album to praise our Lord. With our country rock background and our rock routes we've hopefully accomplished what God wanted us to do. Which is to make a great unique Christian rock album to spread God's word to Christians and non-Christians alike. We then used one of the most talented producers around to put it together in a way that is hopefully worthy of the gift our Lord has given us in our song writing. Everything just fell into place from us turning down a great country rock career move, finding an amazing fellow Christian female backing vocalist who joined us and then bringing in our own son/brother who was lost and now is found and using his talents for God. God sent us so many wonderful leadings, all we did was try and follow them the best we could. Thanks Lord for everything."
Keith and Chris were unaware that another group with the name Truth had enjoyed considerable popularity in the USA in the '70s, '80s and '90s and an amazing number of artists (including Steve Green, Dick and Melody Tunney, 4Him, Russ Lee, two members of Avalon and Natalie Grant) had once been members of the US group. For Keith, deciding on the Truth moniker was much deeper than simply selecting a catchy name. He said, "We picked our name as a symbol of a turning point in our lives as six years ago we had put a lot of time and money into the band we were in at the time. Calling ourselves Truth was an attempt to get our son/brother into something good. Through this band we changed him and us from singing (as we call it, not the Truth) everyday normal songs to singing the Truth about our God and how he is everything. What a transformation. So to us our name has a lot of personal/family meaning."
Keith is keen to emphasise the spiritual intentions of the band. "Truth is trying 100 per cent to show the world that it's cool to be a Christian and to love God. We've been involved in the music industry for some time and encountered all kinds of people and the view of our Christian faith is always the same. We all have to put up with sneers and jokes but we won't stand for it any more. We're Christians and proud of it and hopefully our music will show them all it's cool to be a Christian."
With considerable support already received for 'Can't Wait Another Day' Keith and Chris are now hard at work in the next step of their grassroots strategy. Said Keith, "The next stage of our project is that we've just made our debut video to the second track on our CD, 'Summer'. So I guess trying to get it shown on God TV would be our next aim and from their just keep pushing. And hopefully attract some live gigs, like Spring Harvest, etc."
