Psalm 22, Matthew 27:39, 44 and 46, Luke 23:33, John 19:23-24
Continued from page 1
These sound like Matthew 27:39 and 44 which says of Jesus
crucifixion:
'The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their
heads in mockery. Even the revolutionaries who were crucified with him
ridiculed him in the same way.'
David continues Psalm 22:16 with the words:
'They have pierced my
hands and feet.'
Sounds like Luke 23:33 which says:
'When they came to a place
called The Skull, they nailed him to the cross'
Psalm 22:17-18:
'My enemies stare at me and gloat. They divide my
garments among themselves and throw dice for my clothing.'
That sounds a lot like what happened to Jesus, captured by John in
John 19:23-24:
'When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they
divided his clothes among the four of them. They also took his robe,
but it was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. So they
said, "Rather than tearing it apart, let's throw dice for it."'
Or perhaps most poignantly of all is how the song begins in verse
1:
'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?'
The very words that Jesus uttered in the last moments of his life in
Matthew 27:46:
Jesus, the Son of God - cries out to Father God -
where are you?
David sings out about his struggles - his suffering - but as he does so his song captures a picture that is so powerful and profound - a picture of a God who suffers, a God who struggles. Jesus is the suffering God. So when we ask, 'God where are you in my suffering? You don't understand what it's like to be afraid? You don't understand what it's like to be alone? You don't understand what it's like to be misunderstood and rejected? You don't understand what it's like to face death? You don't understand what it's like to suffer', the cross stands at the centre piece of human history and loudly declares that God understands because He suffered - He suffered for us - He understands our suffering, He is with us in our suffering.
And that's the big 'AHA' for David in this song, whatever happens, whether I feel like God is close or not, whether I feel like God is silent or not, I will not let go of God, he understands, he knows, I will trust Him, He will bring me through.
