Ezekiel 37:1-3, Luke 1:37
"The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones. And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry. And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest". (Ezekiel 37:1-3)
Prophet Ezekiel's vision of the valley of dry bones and the miraculous things that happened therein is a popular Bible passage. The literal and spiritual significance of the events that occurred in that valley will ever remain outstanding and a source of great hope and inspiration to believers in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Some features of the bones in the vision are outlined as follows:
- The bones were very many: This can signify the situation where an individual or groups of persons are confronted with many hardships and challenges in which there seems to be no way out of them. And incidentally each of these problems can bring a different kind of negative impact. The combined effects of many dry situations can be very devastating.
- The bones were very dry: They were not just dry and lifeless but very dry! This would mean that hope for their restoration was farfetched. The situation was hopeless and impossible by human reckoning.
These negative circumstances and reports notwithstanding, the God of all flesh with whom nothing shall be impossible (Luke 1:37) caused the many dry bones to rise and become and exceeding great army. What a mighty God!
Can the dry and difficult situations confronting us, our families and communities ever be turned to positive testimonies? Yes they can.
In the case of Prophet Ezekiel, God asked him to prophecy on those very many dry bones, and he prophesied as commanded and those very many dry bones were able to be resurrected back to life again. We also can speak the word of God to as many very dry situations in our lives (be it lack, poverty, sickness, barrenness, joblessness etc). And they shall come back to life again.
