Matthew 6: 6
Have you ever fainted? I haven't, but the limited first aid knowledge I have, reminds me that if ever I was to feel faint I should put my head between my knees.
So why is it that when we feel faint with life, when the essays are due in, when the pressure is on, when work wants more, and your life is spiralling out of control, do we not follow this advice? Why when we feel faint do we not put our heads between our knees? I am not suggesting that each of us strikes a somewhat unusual pose when we are feeling the pressures of life: Although this would make a funny and unusual system. I am however suggesting that we place ourselves in a position, which traps out the world and allows us to think more clearly. Where do you pray?
Matthew 6: 6 tells us that when we pray we are to go into our room and close the door.
In one way we are encouraged to close the door in prayer to prevent us from showing off in our prayer life. In another way we are encouraged to close the door to prevent life from standing between God and us. Ever tried praying and seeking Gods direction in a room where people constantly ask you one thing or another? Ever tried listening to God with the TV on between phone chats and text messages? It is nearly impossible. If I was God I'd be insulted if every time I tried to speak to you, you turned to watch the TV or text message your other friend.
Instead move out of the situation, take a heavenly step back and see things from a more possible perspective. Close the door to the world and enter the heavenlies. They are more exciting than Eastenders.
Jesus was often seen escaping the crowds to go up a mountain to find peace from the world. And sure enough once He'd cleared His head and heart with His Father, He returned to do great works.
Martin Luther King once said, 'I have a very busy day today, so I will do two hours prayer and not one.' He got it right, the more we do, the more we need to find time to be with the Father. I know in my own experience this is so true. The other day I had lots of work to do and I decided to do it the God way instead, to not push God to the end of the busy day, but put Him in place before the work began. What a difference! My creative juices flowed, my mind was inspired and my heart right, I flew through the day with the right Spirit. If only I was self disciplined to do this all the time.
Don't allow the world to pull you down today. Instead take a step back, find a room and close the door. Get God alongside you and then face the music, it won't seem as loud.
And if you are sitting there saying I don't have a room, perhaps one of these will work for you.
1. A toilet cubicle (great for a 5 minute prayer)
2. A store room
somewhere
3. A car (the added bonus here is a built in stereo
system to allow the Christian tunes to lead you into His presence)
Try them, your Father will be waiting to hear from you. He'll be waiting always with the Sprit, quick to comfort and guide you through all times. If your boss wants to know where you've gone, tell Him you've gone for an important meeting with 3 collegues.
