Rebecca Duffett spoke with Dr Vicky Lavy of the Christian Medical Fellowship

We put an appeal out by email message and on our website asking for help. Within five days we'd raised £20,000 which was our target. Then the money was still coming in after that and now we've raised over £25,000. We're thrilled and it just shows how much people want to give. How much people want to support our brothers and sisters across the world as they face this huge crisis.

Rebecca: Another way people can support these situations is by praying. What would you encourage people to pray for the situation?

Dr Vicky Lavy: I think we need to pray for the people who've been directly affected, who've lost their homes. We need to pray for God to have mercy and to get the help that they need. Then I think we need to pray for all of those who are helping them. Of course we're particularly wanting to pray for these Christian doctors that we've been raising money for and the staff at the hospital there. We want to pray for encouragement as they face this enormous task and for stamina and strength as they have to do so much extra work. We pray that God will continue to give them love and compassion for the people they're serving.

It really humbles me to hear about the staff of both these hospitals. When it was the end of Ramadan and the Muslims celebrate the festival of Eid, the staff wanted to bless the communities around them. They took Eid gifts just like we would give Christians presents. They took Eid gifts to all the Muslims around them in their community. The staff of the hospital actually gave up two days of their wages to provide these gifts. I think that's incredibly humbling, that people who already have so little are doing that.

Rebecca: That's great to hear. If people want to find out more about the Christian Medical Fellowship, do you have a website?

Dr Vicky Lavy: We do, it's www.cmf.org.uk Just to say that our appeal is actually closed now because we have reached the target and what we promised to give. We are thinking of other ways that we can support in the future. But our appeal is now closed.

If people want to give there are of course many other ways of giving; Tear Fund and Christian Blind Mission and many other organisations. Also our international fellowship which is the International Christian Medical and Dental Association has launched an appeal to help in Pakistan, so that's another way that people could give and that would be through the ICMDA website. CR
