Kat Mills considers the importance of what defines us in life.
I am not at all ashamed to say that this blog was inspired by watching the comedy sequel 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2'.
I am a big fan of cheesy chick flicks and comedy. It just has to be gentle, predictable and leave me with a big smile - I'm not too fussy! If you're an adrenaline junky, action-paced movie watcher then I am not your ideal cinema buddy. I live out the movies scene by scene and it is far too stressful for me. Of course, I will have to have googled the movie so that I have the entire plot in my mind to cope with any unpredictability.
I was very excited when I saw this sequel hitting the TV screens, as I loved the original from all those years ago. I was delighted to be transported back to the familiar characters and their family dynamics.
As I watched the movie, it struck me again how being Greek defines everything about Tula's family. It defines their language, intonations, family relationships and how they treat others. They breath, eat, sleep and drink being Greek. The patriarch figure is convinced the whole population is actually Greek and all descended from Alexander the Great and this stance blinds him to everything else. He lives in this 'Greek' bubble. As I watched the chaotic family and the messy relationships I saw family spirit and the love and respect they have for each other. Being Greek is their identity - it gives them purpose, meaning and sets them apart.
This really got me thinking about what is it that defines us? If you were to sum up Tula's family in one word it would be 'Greek'. If someone summed you up in one word what would it be? Maybe more importantly, would it be something you would want to be known by?
What is it that we love, the thing that motivates us and is within our every word and every breath? Is it ambition or kindness, money or love, family or a relationship?
I know what I would hope people would say for me, and most certainly what I hope they wouldn't say! But it gets you thinking doesn't it? What is at the centre of our lives, constantly occupying that place in our thinking and making its way into every action we make? What is it that truly defines us?
As a Christian the thing I long to be defined by is the love of God. I want this to be evident in every aspect of my life. I am continually overwhelmed by God's love, believing that He sent His Son, Jesus, to live, die on a cross and rise again to save us. The mind-blowing thing for me is that it is not by my own actions and deeds that I walk in freedom, but by His love.
For me this is so overwhelming and overpowering that it truly effects everything in my life. I have a confidence, a peace and a hope that give me strength in every situation. Something I aspire to is to imitate Jesus and His love and that includes incredible mercy, generosity, kindness and forgiveness. It means allowing it to shine through me. This is not just on a one-off! Tula's family weren't part-time Greeks: every second of every minute of every hour of every day they were Greek, in everything they did.
I want the same to be true in my life - being defined by God's love.
So what is it that defines you? Is it something life-giving and positive, or is it something that's dragging you down? Is it time for a change?
