The name is "First Gospel" in Greek, and is a term used to describe Genesis 3:15, but for our purposes here, they are a worship group from Calvary Fellowship in Seattle. They have produced an album comprising some traditional hymns mixed with their own compositions. Overall, the album has very much a soft, adult rock feel that strays into jazz territory at times. There is quite a bit of variety in the instrumentation used, giving some comparison to the likes of Rend Collective Experiment but without their edginess. Main vocalist Riley Taylor's delivery style is laid back but works well, particularly on his own compositions. His Radiohead-esque "Resurrection Of The Dead" is probably the standout track. The arrangements are quite interesting in places, such as "Before The Throne Of God Above", but "All Creatures Of Our God and King" is on the dull side, and "The Saviour Calling" is a slow waltz balancing of the precipice of becoming a dirge. The playing is strong and professional, while the production is clear and uncluttered despite the apparent number of instruments used in some of the tracks. Anyone who saw these guys at the Creation Fest in Cornwall this year will know the passion that they convey. All in all, another release showing that modern worship is beginning to move clear of safe formulae.
