There is nothing new under the sun, but this as a criticism could not be aimed at progressive metallers Mayfly. These Ohio-based musicians bring an adventurous blend of styles to their debut EP. Influences that range from the crunching hardcore of Underoath through to radio friendly electronic rock of Family Force 5 can all be heard. Elements of punk are thrown in too, producing an eclectic, fast brand of rock that the group have named recycled nu metal. Opening with the spoken "Choice", the album's theme - fear God, not manmade rules - is introduced. This is picked up in the aggressive "Infidel Castro" with its maniacal guitar work and gang vocals. "Jihad" is probably the most cohesive track combining the range of instrumentation most successfully whilst highlighting the part rapped, part spoken vocals. "Eternal Respiration" makes two appearances on the EP, once as a remix that includes electronic samples and beats. A Christian world view is reflected throughout but the lyrics are not overtly Christian in tone. Mayfly bring a sound to this recording that is definitely influenced by the past, but is inventive and challenging. There is much on display and this is a promising first outing. It will be interesting to see how the creative talents of Mayfly develop, but in the meantime this short release is worth seeking out.
