Reviewed by Tony Cummings Songs that have lines like "alone in the dark/with a broken heart" have been the staple diet of mainstream R&B for decades so it's hardly surprising that track one contains such a timeless image. Phil, of course, was one of the GREAT voices of '70s R&B, and now that Earth Wind And Fire have come out of retirement to gig once more he'll no doubt be showing the new kids on the block how sweet soul should be sung. On this set it's classy, slinky, jazz-tinged R&B with superlative guest players including Grover Washington Jr, Kirk Whalum, George Duke, Randy Brecker and many more top names. Whether Phil's doing a fluid cover of Van Morrison's "Moondance" or the mid tempo Erik Huber floater, "Dream Like I Do", this set is deliciously, evocative music. Disappointingly, no gospel songs, but if you're looking for a classy, jazz-tinged soul album to romance your loved one, Phil's still a class act.
