The Mass In D major, Opus 123, to give this work its full title, is generally agreed to be one of Beethoven's masterpieces as well as one of his most challenging scores. Somehow, amidst his emotional and spiritual worries, Beethoven produced one of the most profound pieces of music ever written. Over the years there have been many different recordings made, often with a different "take" such as using period instruments or varying the tempo. The Nashville Symphony Orchestra and Choir under Kenneth Schermerhorn opt for a sensible and safe approach. None of the soloists are big names and all of them acquit themselves with credit. This is not intended as faint praise: the overall impression is that the musicians are allowing the music to speak to us in all its glory - and this is truly glorious music. Even if you already own a recording of the Missa Solemnis this is well worth the five pounds and if you do not then it is indispensable.
