Back in its very first issue Cross Rhythms showed its radical colours by running the first ever interview with a then obscure garage band from Austin, Texas, Lust Control. Since then Lust Control have gone on to bigger and better things (CDs instead of hissy tapes) while losing none of their smack-in-your-face intensity and unerring ability to cause offence both outside and within the church. A bit like One Bad Pig without the subtlety (subtlety?! Ed), this four-piece use hardcore/anarcho-punk/grunge as a framework to make a series of savage attacks at masturbation ("The Big M"), lukewarm Christians ("You Make Me Puke"), abortion ("Operation Rescue"), incest ("The Secret") and the misuse of tongues ("Speaking In Tongues"). Clearly the band appear to some as judgmental prigs and to others as sloganeering airheads but there's so much wit and humour in this 17-track re-recording of their greatest songs that I thoroughly recommend it as an antidote to all that mealy mouthed, wouldn't-say-boo-to-a-goose music that pours fourth from America's bloated CCM scene.
