The frontman for Coopertheband is Cooper Brown from Jackson, Tennessee and although there's nothing particularly original in his music approach, which pitches somewhere in the middle of the Arcade Fire and Mumford And Sons indie folk rock sound, the strength of Cooper's melodies and his poignantly effective voice make 'Kings' an above average release. Something of a concept EP (if such things exist), the first track is an introduction to the psalmist David and the last track, "Stay Don't Go", a vivid depiction of David running from Saul (1 Samuel 8:20). A review of 'Kings' written in 2012 prophesied that Coopertheband were "soon going to make its mark in the music realm." That hasn't quite happened yet but the songwriting talent on display here bodes well for the future.
