My first question on putting this CD into the player was, "What is going to set Charlie's album apart from those of countless other husky voiced, guitar slinging, Nashville-based singer/songwriters?" Well, there are two answers to that - firstly, his time spent as a monk and the influence he acknowledges from the writing of Christian monastics and mystics adds a perspective to his lyrics that rises above standard evangelical fare. In fact, Charlie's desire to focus so clearly on the Gospel and the character of God means that the content of the songs is rich and edifying. Secondly, his lyrical dexterity is exciting to listen to, particularly on the tracks "Even Close" (his brave attempt to fit the entire Gospel into a catchy three minute tune) and "Misconception". Musically, there is not so much originality, the track "Who?" sounds particularly clunky. But on the whole 'Prologue To This Drama' is perfectly listenable. Think the inspiring melodies of Bebo Norman crossed with the relaxed nature of Jack Johnson and you are close to this CD.

Dude, this album rocks!!!! I found it extremely musically original...especially compared to all the other artists in the CCM world who sound exactly alike. This guy's music is the deepest stuff out there and the music doesn't even sound like Christian music at all. Think Jack Johnson meets Jason Mraz talking to John Mayer and Dave Matthews. Great stuff. Don't pass this album up. You'll regret it.
